Neponset River Trail: It's Being Paved!

October 8, 2001

On Columbus Day, we checked out the trail, and the base pavement is down from Central Ave. to the High Speed Line underpass, about half the trail! The promise of pavement by first snow is likely to happen, although there is still a problem with the tenant at Granite Ave. who has refused to move. New pavement east of Granite Ave. may not occur this fall, but there is already a road there which can be followed to the Keystone section of the Neponset Trail. We are awaiting a traffic study which should recommend the installation of some sort of traffic control at the Granite Ave. crossing. It is being done as part of the project to design new parkland along the Neponset in that area. As soon as the base coat is down, I will lead a bike ride on the Trail; e-mail dmink@massbike.org if you want to be notified when that will happen.

The MDC got $700,000 to extend the Neponset Trail north from the Port Norfolk neighborhood of Dorchester, where this year's project ends. As the designs are ready, construction could start next spring, although that section still has to undergo environmental review.

On Saturday, October 13, at 10:00, there will be a ride along Mother Brook, one of the Neponset's largest tributaries. A PDF map is available here.
