Winter went out with one last major snowfall, as around 10 inches fell
around my house in Roslindale, starting around 10:00 pm Monday, when I was
on my way home from a movie, and turning to sleet, then drizzle on
Tuesday morning. There was more rain and snow through the day on
Tuesday, causing us to postpone the monthly Boston Bikes Advisory
Group meeting at City Hall. That all froze overnight, and I headed out
at 7:00 on mostly wet streets with ice around the edges. Icy windows
limited driver visibilty, and I would tend to blame that, plus morning
rush hour impatience, for the driver that tried to pass me on my left
as I was turning left, with my hand out, on Walter St. in Roslindale.
I felt a lot safer later when I could ride the bike paths

Boston Parks and Recreation did a great job! The path was plowed
clear by late morning on Tuesday. I suspect that it might have been
a bit icy on Wednesday morning, though it's been salted and shouldn't
be too bad.

Charles River Bikepaths
Narrow, shared bike-ped path with few intersections
Department of Conservation and Recreation
|
The Cambridge-side path didn't look plowed from the BU Bridge on
Tuesday morning, so I rode through Cambridge. By Tuesday night,
it was plowed at least from Harvard Square to the BU Bridge, though
it got worse the closer you got to the bridge. I got on the Memorial
drive exit ramp at the Cottage Farm driveway.
On Wednesday morning, the path or parallel sidewal was plowed
on the Newton/Boston side from Watertown Square at least to the
Eliot Bridge. There were very icy places, unbikable snow at
intersections, and a few huge puddles under ice which only
sometimes broke through. Studded tires only! Though if the
ice melts off and stays that way, there will just be occasional
flodding to deal with.

Peter Davis reports on Wednesday, March 20:
I rode the bikepath at about 8:00 this morning from Bow St. in the
Heights to Alewife. Most of the path is covered with frozen slush,
with a fine layer of powder snow on top of that. There are bike ruts
and footprints frozen into the surface, so some of it is quite bumpy,
especially on the bridges over Brattle and Grove streets.
The stretch between Thorndike and Magnolia fields has been salted and
is pretty clear (and salty.) However, the branch that goes over the
wooden footbridge near Alewife has not been well cleared or salted,
and is still very frozen and bumpy.
Use caution and, if possible, studded snow tires.

These paths aren't plowed because they get relatively little transportation

are marked narrow bike lanes on Enneking Parkway through the
reservation which are probably clear.

Craig Della Penna, who lives next to the path, has reported that
it is the intention of the DPW to make it passable ASAP after a storm.
If the storm is significant, then they plow it repeatedly --sometimes
10-12 times during the course of the storm to ensure its usability.
