MassBike Boston Bikepath Snow Plowing Report
January 12, 2001

Bikepaths are an integral part of the bicycle transportation network, and these reports are provided to encourage their use by bicyclists who might otherwise not venture out in the snow, and to encourage their proper maintenance (which includes snow plowing) by the responsible agencies given in bold type below.

Most of Boston's bikepaths *are* plowed and/or sanded, but this winter's weather, where the city gets an inch or two of ice every couple of weeks and temperatures stay below freezing most of the time, has not made it easy for anyone to keep paths clear. Very little salt has been used on the paths this year, which is fine with me, as it keeps my bike from corroding. Some roads are blanketed with a cloud of small salt particles which can't be too healthy to breathe, so I've been content to deal with the ice on the paths and breathe cleaner air. Here are reports of the paths I've ridden this week from south, where I live, to north: Please send updates and reports on the conditions of other paths in Massachusetts to Doug Mink dmink@massbike.org.

Arnold Arboretum
1.5 miles of park roads which are mostly closed to automobile traffic with no intersections
Boston Parks and Harvard University
Except on the hills, there is a lot of ice on the roads. I've been riding it all winter, though I wouldn't recommend that anyone who is not really experience with ice try riding through. Some of the ice has been sanded, but not all of it.
Jamaicaway Bikepath
1.5 miles of mostly bike/ped-separated paths paralleling a busy 4-lane parkway; two intersections with traffic lights
Boston Parks Deparment
This is mostly clear, and seems to have been sanded Thursday or Friday, but there are still some icy stretches north of the boathouse and at the bottom of the hill south of Willow Pond Ave. The last is pretty dangerous if you are headed north (downhill), but not so bad if you are going south (uphill).
Olmsted Park Paths
3/4-mile of mostly bike/ped-separated paths built over River Road, , across Leverett Pond from the Jamaicaway.
Brookline Park Department
This is plowed from Route 9 to the parking lot at Chestnut St. Unhappily, the plow turned around and plowed the pedestrian path, so there is no plowed connection to Perkin St., Pond Ave, or Chestnut St.
Muddy River Path
12-foot-wide 0.6 mile shared bike/ped path with no intersections
Brookline Park Department and DPW
It's almost all bare pavement now, with sand and maybe some salt on some of it.
B.U. Bridge
Western sidewalk has little pedestrian traffic and connects to the Memorial Drive bikepath.
The western sidewalk is entirely clear, but the Cambridge approach is icy.
Charles River Bikepath
Narrow, shared bike-ped path with few intersections
Metropolitan District Commission
The MDC plowed it after last weekend's snow, but the ice which has built up since mid-December is still there. If I didn't have front shocks and a shock-absorbing seatpost, I would bypass the stretch from the B.U. Bridge to River St. Upstream to the Eliot Bridge, there is almost always bare pavement showing, and near Harvard, the full path is clear.
Southwest Corridor Bikepath
Separated Bike/Ped path with poorly-designed intersections
Metropolitan District Commission
I rode this with David Wean Thursday morning, and it was mostly clear. It has been plowed, but there are a few icy stretches.
