MassBike Spin to the Harbor Islands
Saturday, July 24, 2010

We had a great day, with more sun than we expected for the 15 cyclists who did this ride. We got a little lost in Chelsea, but Mark Warren's knowledge of East Boston made this one of the most educational of the six rides we've done to Deer Island. Larry, an East Boston activist, also helped us find the long-lost Winthrop Greenway, which we rode for a couple of hundred yards for a more pleasant experience that Washington St. Unhappily, we had a total of four flat tires, the first when Doug's front rim split in Roslindale at the ride's pre-start, the second a hundred yards from the start in Charlestown, the third as we were leaving Belle Isle Marsh, and the fourth on John Allen's bike at the lunch stop. Luckily, our group was small enough to wait for repairs--well, Doug had to walk his bike a half-mile home and swap wheels while Ron waited in Roslindale Square--and there were many hands to make quick work of patching the tubes.

On Sunday, Doug recovered from this urban adventure with a scenic ride in southern New Hampshire.
