Wake Up the Earth

The 28th Annual Wake Up the Earth Festival will be held on Saturday, May 6th
(Rain Date: Saturday, May 13th), and the theme is "Peace in the Streets:
Communities United with Youth." In conjunction with our regular youth
programs, we are calling for an end to youth violence by focusing on
providing opportunities for our youths to positively impact their community.
There is a parade down Centre St. in the morning and a festival in the afternoon in the Southwest Corridor Linear Park between Stony Brook MBTA station and Minton St. |
Bike/Ped/Rail Trail Caucus

The state legislature's Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Rail Trail Caucus,
co-chaired by Senator Pam Resor and Representative Anne Paulsen,
will meet in room 222 of the State House. There will be a discussion
on the tradition of charity rides in Massachusetts and how they benefit
the Commonwealth with John Siemiatkoski, coordinator of MS bike tours
in Massachusetts and Billy Starr of the Pan-Mass Challenge. A brief
legislative update will follow.

This Land: The Battle over Sprawl and the Future of America,
at the Harvard Book Store.
In his book, he "explores the economic, cultural, and political forces that
make it difficult for sensible growth to gain a foothold in the United
States." Sprawl is a barrier to increased bicycle use, too. There is
a cluster of bike racks directly in front of the store.

Part 2: Monday May 15th, 5:30-8:30, Newburyport.
This on-bike training for beginning and intermediate cyclists is geared to adults who want to get back into bicycling, improve basic cycling skills, and/or participate in a large-scale benefit ride. This course will teach you how to operate your bicycle more smoothly (including shifting gears), ride safely on roadways, increase your pedaling efficiency, climb hills more easily, participate in group ride events, and more. Please note that this class is divided over two sessions: registrants must be able to attend both. $40 for MassBike and MassCommute members, as well as Mass Red Ribbon Ride, PMC, and MS Riders; $50 for non-members. Introduction to Bicycling Safety is a pre-requisite. Register online until noon, May 11. |
Bicycing 201

Intermediate/Advanced Road Riding: This day-long, on-bike training is
meant for adults who are intermediate or advanced cyclists. The class
will teach you to cycle more efficiently and will include emergency
manuevers, fixing a flat, complicated left turns and lane changes,
rotary riding, and more.
Intro to Bicycling Safety is a prerequisite; Bicycling 101 is also suggested but may be skipped by experienced cyclists. $40 for MassBike and MassCommute members, as well as Mass Red Ribbon Ride, PMC, and MS Riders; $50 for non-members. Register online until noon, May 11. Participants may also choose to enjoy an optional, free Instructor-Led Ride on Sunday, May 28 from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. to complement the class lessons. Bike the Charles

Meet at Herter Park, off Soldier's Field near Everett St. in Allston
to ride the entire length of the Charles River bikepath system, about
27 miles. We'll bike down to the New Charles River Dam, cross over
and bike up the north bank of the river (except for a stretch in Newton)
all of the way to Prospect St. in Waltham, then bike back on the south
bank (except for a stretch in Waltham). Almost all of the ride will
be on bikepaths. This ride is cosponsored by MassBike's Metro Boston
Chapter, Hub On Wheels, the Cambridge Bicycle Committee, and ...

On May 17 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America
and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent
procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while
cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to
share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware
of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
The 8.5 mile (one-way) Boston area ride will start from the Arlington Heights Playground parking lot behind Trader Joe's. The route will follow Massachusetts Ave. to Somerville Ave. (Porter Square, Cambridge) to Beacon St. to Broadway (Kendall Square) over the Longfellow Bridge to Cambridge St. (Boston) to Tremont St. to Boston Common. |

Join the Cambridge Bicycle Committee for a leisurely ride through the streets of Cambridge as part of the city's annual GoGreen Month activities. The theme of this spring's bike tour is Green Buildings of Cambridge. The ride will take about two hours with a few short stops along the way where we'll hear about featured buildings. We'll be escorted by the Cambridge Police Bike Patrol. Refreshments will be provided at the end of the ride. A shorter version of the ride for families with small children may also be available. Join the Somerville Bicycle Committee and the Somerville Historic
Preservation Commission for the 5th Annual Bicycle Tour of Historic
Somerville. The ride starts in the parking lot of Somerville City Hall,
93 Highland Avenue (just east of School Street). We'll ride for about
10 miles, and we should be finished around 1 pm.
We'll visit historic sites throughout Somerville, including the Prospect Hill Tower, the Old Powder House, the Somerville Armory, and beautiful old houses all over the city. Charles River Wheelmen

Join The Charles River Wheelmen on one of four beautiful routes on
slightly rolling rural roads through the Merrimack Valley of
northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. The 100 mile ride
will take you through Exeter and Hampton Falls, NH. The other routes
travel through such towns as Boxford, Groveland and Topsfield. All
routes pass through the Harold Parker State Forest.

The Easthampton MA Bike Commute Week/Manhan Rail Trail fundraising
breakfast will take place Sunday, May 21 from 8-11am at the American
Legion Post on Pleasant Street. Admission will be by freewill
donation and all proceeds will go to the Friends of the Manhan Rail
Trail for the maintenance and improvement of the trail.
The Easthampton American Legion is directly adjacent to the Manhan Rail Trail. So join them for breakfast and then enjoy a walk or ride on our beautiful new trail.
Breakfast items will include scrambled eggs, toast, sausage, French
toast, orange juice, and coffee. Bicycle commuting maps of the
Pioneer Valley will be available, as well as educational information
about safe cycling.

As part of Cambridge Green Streets Initiative's Last-Friday-of-the-Month
WALK/RIDE DAY, people who live, work, study or send children to school
in Cambridge are being asked to WEAR GREEN and walk, ride a bus, train,
bike, or scooter, skate pogo-stick, stilt, scooter... - whatever! - etc.
to work, errands, or school on that day each month. Check with your
school's or businesses's coordinator, or become one yourself!
