One Winter St., Department of Environmental Protection
Facilities for employees:
There's a locked bike room, fits about 10 bikes easily, and showers (no lockers) There's no charge.
Desired facilities:
A larger bike room -- in the summer there can be ~20 bikes.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
Keep a change of clothes at work or bring some in my bike bags
Number of bicyclists:
The number varies. ~20-30 in the summer. 5-10 in the winter.
Contact:
The McCormack Building, 1 Ashburton Place, Beacon Hill
Facilities for employees:
Shower and Lockers for men. There is a waiting list for the lockers.
The women have more limited facilities that they share with the state police. Indoor rack (in the parking garage) for people who work in the building. The people who run the garage recently removed 2 of the 3 bike racks in favor of motorcycle parking. The remaining rack is in a poor location. I am working to try and have them improve the situation.
Facilities for visitors:
Outdoor rack for visitors on the patio at the front of the building. Covered, but not very secure.
Desired facilities: How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
I generally don't take a shower unless it is really hot outside and I
perspired a whole lot on the ride in. Most of the time, toweling off and
changing clothing is enough. I keep suits at work (and some at home). I
bring in socks and underwear, and I have my shirts laundered at a cleaner
on the hill.
Number of bicyclists:
I would say that there are about 7 regular commuters during the warm
months. On some days in the summer there may be double that number (15 or
so). In the winter it drops to 2 or 3 (I take the train when it is really
cold and wet, or lots of snow and ice). This is in a building with 21
stories, so it is not a significant percentage.
Contact:
There is no bicycle users group in the building or area, but I am in
contact with many of the regular commuters, and I would like to start one.
Michael Hering, work 727-2200 ext. 2572,
MGHering@world.std.com
38 Chauncy St., Downtown Boston
Facilities for employees:
Nearby public parking at 101 Arch Street garage. No fee.
Desired facilities:
locker or changing area in my building

ride at moderate pace and dress appropriately. Work is 4.6 miles from
home.
Number of bicyclists: Contact:
Tremont Street
Facilities for employees:
I am allowed to bring my bike up in the elevator and leave it outside of my office.
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
I have been commuting for 11 years and am quite happy with my current facilities or lack thereof.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
I have no facilities such as a shower. I do have an office with a door to change in and a bathroom in which I can wash up in. I carry my clothes back and forth to work daily in my packs. I even dress in a skirt and blouse or a dress everyday. I have been known to carry a suit and change into it when I get to work. I only commute 7 months of the year.
Number of bicyclists:
I believe one or two others have biked to work in the past years.
Contact:
22 Pittsburgh Street, Boston
Facilities for employees:
Showers, indoor bike rack, lockers and security cameras for observing bike rack
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
More showers, lockers, (we have a health club that is very popular so sometimes it gets crowded!)
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:Number of bicyclists:
Hard to determine, many people use the racks but many others store their bikes around the building...
Contact:
listed from SE to NW
One Cambridge Center, Kendall Square
Facilities for employees:
Locked bike room, complimentary key.
Facilities for visitors:
Many good bike racks in the area.
Desired facilities: How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
I always leave some "work clothes" in a closet at work, so I can change into fresh clothes after my ride. I take them home once a week to be laundered, or take them to a drycleaner in Kendall Square.
Number of bicyclists:
At my company: about 5-6.
Contact:
U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Volpe Center, Kendall Square
Facilities for employees:
Showers, outside racks open to all
Facilities for visitors:
Racks, 1 in front, 2 in back.
Desired facilities:
Inside storage room, esp. For overnight storage, with keys issued to cyclists.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
Drip dry --actually, most of the year it's not a problem for me. In warm weather, I wait 10 min., wash, then change from my cycling clothes into my work clothes.
Number of bicyclists:
We have about 1,000 employees. There are about 30 members of the bug and maybe 20-25 bicycle commuters, at least occassionally. Of those, probably 5-10 year-round. Max accumulation of parked bicycles is only about 15.
Contact:
Volpe Bicycle Users Group (BUG). Contact Paul Schimek, 494-3601,
schimek@volpe2.Dot.Gov
BUG has done bike week events in 1995 & 1996. I also have sponsored Effective Cycling classes on site and would be happy to do them for any group of at least 5 -- 9 hours and empty parking lot needed.
Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, Radcliffe area
Facilities for employees:
Showers at the gyms. Many racks, of varying degrees of security.
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
More racks (bikes parked on railings, etc. from lack of space). Inside storage room, esp. for overnight storage, with keys issued to cyclists. A shower _here_ would be great, but I can use one elsewhere if necessary.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
Take a fresh shirt, keep a pair of shoes at the office in case it's raining hard and my shoes get soaked.
Number of bicyclists:
Many students bicycle. In my office, 2 year-round and 1 summer commuters out of 15 people. Car parking costs $500+ per year.
Contact:
Harvard Observatory (CFA), 60 Garden St.
Facilities for employees:
Shower (1 per sex for 300+-person complex, but that seems to be enough). You have to know where the showers are--they are in obscure restrooms.
Dishdrainer racks, but bikes allowed in offices. There are racks at the two major entrances to our complex.
Facilities for visitors:
Everything is available for visitors, though on really nice days, the bike racks fill up.
Desired facilities:
I would like to have a bigger office with more room for my bike.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
Clothing is not an issue--shorts and T-shirt are fine for summer wear in this academic environment, though it is more formal than MIT. I tend to wear less insulation than the weather appears to warrant and do not get too sweaty. If it's hot, I carry a spare T-shirt and rinse off at the restroom sink at the end of the hall. I only take a shower if it is *really* hot.
Number of bicyclists:
30-40 of the 300 people in our complex bike on nice days, and at least 20 bike through the winter. Two professors on my hallway are fair weather (20+-mile EACH way) commuters, and until last year, we had one of the region's oldest bike commuters who kept riding almost until his 90th birthday. He was the first director of the Center and contributed, at least in style, to an institutional tolerance of bicycles.
Contact:
Ten Canal Park
Facilities for employees:
Locked bike room w/ rack. Outdoor bike rack. Locker room w/ shower. For access, you need to work in the building. You also have to request a key for the bike room. No fees.
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities: How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
Keep 3 pairs of pants and 1 pair shoes at work. Wear tights or cheapo nylon warm-up pants when riding. Change at work. In the summer I keep shirts in the office, too. Ride to the train station is only 1.5 miles. I haven't attempted the 35+ mile commute into the office via bicycle.
Number of bicyclists: Contact:
BBN, Concord Ave and CambridgePark Drive
Facilities for employees:
Showers & lockers; bike sheds, racks, & lockers. Talk to HR dept; no charge.
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
More indoor parking; more closets.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
Take shower; keep clothes in office or closet.
Number of bicyclists:
I would guess several dozen. The HR dept has done some surveys.
Contact:
Gordon College, Grapevine Rd., Wenham MA
Facilities for employees:
My office is located on the 4th floor (building has an elevator). I ride into the building and go right into a handicapped bathroom (has a lock on the door). Plenty of room for me and my bike. I use the sink and soap dispensor and wash up. Take my change of clothes out of my panniers & put my bicycle stuff back in them. I then take my bike to my office (via elevator) and hang up my clothes.
Facilities for visitors:
I think one could get a visitor's pass and use the gym.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:Number of bicyclists:
I am the only regular commuter, there are a couple of other occasional ones.
Contact:
Bayer Corp, Agfa Division, 200 Ballardvale St, Wilmington, MA 01887
Facilities for employees:
Several showers and small lockers in 1 ea. mens and ladies rooms. One old-fashioned bike rack. No bike lockers. Good security guard coverage of parking lot, so I'm not too concerned about bike theft.
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
Bike lockers or lockable shed. - Better bike racks. - More showers.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
I bring in several days worth of clothing at a time (in my car or in panniers). The showers alleviate the sweat!
Number of bicyclists:
Nobody tends to bike in winter or bad weather. Several people bike regularly (4-5 days per week) in good weather. There are probably 10 people who bike 1-2 days per week. (I'm in this category.) On a good day, there are 4-5 bikes in the bike
rack and another 2-3 bikes in people's offices. There are probably 600 people in this building, so only a small percentage bike to work.
Contact:
WGBH, 125 Western Ave, Allston
Facilities for employees:
Fenced-off, locked (semi-secure), covered bike storage with "BikeRoot" racks.
Facilities for visitors:
None, and few street signs, no parking meters. This is a problem.
Desired facilities:
Shower, lockers. Indoor or more secure area, better racks.
Number of bicyclists:
About 8-10 people seemed to be biking in October/November, many more in the summer. 1000 employees total. Free (car) parking available.
Contact:
Boston College
Facilities for employees:
Office park, 590 Lincoln St., Waltham, near intersection of Wyman and Lincoln Sts.
Facilities for employees:

Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
An indoor area for bikes.

Number of bicyclists: Contact:
Sybase/Powersoft, 561 Virginia Road, Concord MA
Facilities for employees:
One shower in one of 3 buildings in the office park complex, one small bike rack outside one of 3 buildings in office park complex. The building with the shower is unlocked, so access is easy. No charge.
Facilities for visitors:
Same meager facilities available to employees are also available for visitors.
Desired facilities:
Shower in the very building in which I work so I don't have to go outside to and from the shower, indoor bicycle parking area, place to dry clothing and towel.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
I bring in a change of clothes. After showering, I change to clean clothes. At the end of the day, usually, I change back to my dirty bicycling clothes.
I purchased a wood clothes drying rack and put it in an unused nook under a staircase. I use it to dry my towel and my wet clothes from the morning sweat.
Number of bicyclists:
By informal observation, it appears that one other cyclist commutes to work here at any of the 3 buildings in the office park complex. (Total of 2 known cyclists.)
Contact:
8 Erie Drive, Natick
Facilities for employees:
Shower, employees only, no external bike rack
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
bike rack for visitors, but I won't leave one outside all day
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
bring underwear/T-shirt each day, leave the rest overnight. shower and change (this be hi-tech afterall) jeans are ok
Number of bicyclists:
0 regularly, except myself; 1 or 2 fair weather types
Contact:
Sharon Commuter Rail Station, Sharon, MA
Facilities:
Outdoor bike rack. Accessible to the general public. No fee.
Desired facilities:
Would like covered or indoor bike rack at the train station.
Number of bicyclists:
6-8 in spring, summer, fall; 2-3 in winter
Contact:
OneBeacon Insurance, One Constitution Way, Foxboro, MA
Facilities for employees:
Covered outdoor bike rack in front of the building, observed full time by
security at front desk. We have so few riders that the security people know
who the riders are and which rider belongs to which bike. Showers and
locking lockers are available for both men and women. Most of the people
who use the showers are runners, so space can get a little crowded during
the summer, but there is also unlocked pegs available for hanging clothes on
if you can't get a locker.
Facilities for visitors? Showers and locker use are for people with building
passes only, but visitors could probably call ahead arrange access.
Desired facilities:
The facilities here are perfect as they are.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
either bring a change of clothes in a backpack, or I bring several changes
in by car at the beginning of the week and store them in a locker.
Number of bicyclists:
2-3 intermittent users. Unfortunately most employees live too far away to
effectively commute.
Contact:
Hewlett-Packard Company, 300 Apollo Drive, Chelmsford, MA
Facilities for employees:
Shower, Lockers, Bike rack, Bicycle lockers are budgeted, Bicycle parking inside offices permitted, Guaranteed ride home in case of emergency, Bike to Work Week information and minor repairs, All free except for lockers. We have an on-site Fitness Center that provides lockers for members (~$3.00 per week). Any employee can use the showers without charge. Many people just hang up their riding clothes in their offices during the day.
Facilities for visitors:
Bicycle racks are available for visitors.
Desired facilities:
Bicycle lockers, Borrowable tools and pump.
Number of bicyclists:
It varies quite a bit. We have about 4 people who commute every day by bicycle when the weather is OK and daylight is long. We have maybe 20 people who commute regularly once or more per week during the summer. This is out of 350 people who work at the site.

Anne Anderson, 508/436-5707, aha@apollo.hp.com
UMass, Amherst (Thompson Hall)
Facilities for employees:
Old, obsolete-style bike racks, shower facilities (in several gyms on campus), presumably clothes lockers. I believe there is a nominal charge to use the gyms.
Facilities for visitors: Desired facilities:
I park my bike in my office, so I'm satisfied with how I store my bike. But bike lockers or at least some *real* bike racks would be nice for those who aren't lucky enough to have an indoor space to store their bike.
How respondent deals with clothing/sweat issues:
I don't ride far enough for it to be a problem, but when I used to ride farther, I would transport a change of clothes and wash up and change when I arrived.
Number of bicyclists:
Since UMass is a very large university, conceivably hundreds could cycle to school on a warm day. I've observed up to four bicyclists in a staff of about 30-35 riding to work in my office.
